Music Videos
Depending on the genre of the song, the video will alter significantly. With many different genres in the music world, there are therefore many different types of videos; for example if the song is associated with R&B then the music video will more than likely include the lead singer surrounded by women, 'bling' and money - normally set in a club or bedroom. Due to the nature of the song (lyrically the R&B genre is surrounded by love stories) a video such as this would fit the bill perfectly as the lyrics have built in narratives which can easily be transferred into a music video. Other genres include indie (normally videos of a concert coupled with a short narrative storyline), dance (normally videos of people in clubs with strobe lights and lasers) and hip hop (normally the lead singer miming along to the lyrics whilst surrounded by women, 'bling', cars and money).
The best music videos normally use live performances mixed with a narrative storyline which is either funny or can relate to the audience.
CD Covers
CD covers are very important in the sale of a CD. The cover of the CD is generally what draws the consumer in and encourages them to purchase the album. Again, the front cover of the CD alters dramatically depending on the genre of the music, for example a CD promoting Rap or RnB music will tend to have the lead singer on the front while posing on a car or something similar, whereas if the genre is indie then the front cover will tend to stray from a picture and be more of an animation or random image.
The best CD covers are eye catching and entice the public into looking further into the product. The colours of a CD cover are important, as is the imagery and artwork. Also the band / artist name will almost always appear in a much larger font and more sophisticated text so that the public know exactly what they are buying into.
Magazine advertisement
As with the CD cover, the magazine advert is a very important part of the sale of a CD. The codes and conventions are very similar to that of the CD cover, however the advert has to make the public go out to buy the CD, whereas with the CD cover the public will tend to already be shopping. For this to happen, the advert will have to be incredibly persuasive and will have to be even more eye-catching than the CD cover. The advert will tend to use the album artwork so that there is a level of repetition on the page and also to include continuity so that the public will associate certain colours / images to that of the album by the particular artist. The advert will almost always take up the whole page with various information regarding price, where it can be bought, release date and singles taken from the album.
The best adverts use colour to a great standard, often ranging from light to dark. They will use spectrums and they will also have some interaction with the public by way of persuasive writing to get the public to purchase whatever it is advertising.
